Lionel Messi, the legendary Argentine forward, and his Inter Miami squad are setting new standards in Major League Soccer (MLS) as the league sees a significant rise in player salaries. According to the latest figures released by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA), the average MLS salary has jumped 9.7%. Messi, under contract through 2025, earns an eye-popping $20.4 million annually, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Factoring in additional compensation, including a cut from the MLS Apple TV deal, Messi’s total earnings are estimated to be between $50 million and $60 million annually.

Incredibly, Messi’s total compensation is more than the combined payroll of 22 other MLS teams. His presence on the field and off it has had a transformative impact on the league, with Inter Miami benefiting not just from his footballing prowess but also from increased revenue streams.

Inter Miami's Record-Breaking Season

This season, Inter Miami set an MLS record for the most points in the regular season with 74, thanks in large part to Messi’s 11-minute hat trick in a 6-2 victory over the New England Revolution. The team also won the Supporters’ Shield for the first time in its history. Inter Miami’s record points total was supported by a staggering $41.7 million payroll, which is more than double the amount spent by 23 of the league’s 29 teams.

MLS Salaries Continue to Rise

The average guaranteed base compensation for MLS players has climbed to $596,226, up 9.7% from last year. The median salary has also risen to $308,375, continuing the league’s trend of higher wages for players across the board. The lowest-paying team in the league, CF Montreal, still spent $11.43 million, highlighting the growing financial strength of MLS.

While Inter Miami leads the way with $41.7 million in total spend, other big-spending teams include Toronto FC ($31.81 million) and LAFC ($22.08 million).
